2021 NEHL Wrekenton

After an 18 month absence due to the global pandemic Harrier League returned to hot and humid grassland of Wrekenton.

It’s not often cross country running in England has athletes in sun glasses, crop tops and trail shoes but the opening event of the 21/22 season will be remembered for the heat, hard baked ground and return to competition.

Chris Coulson, Houghton AC, powering up the hill towards the highest point of the Wrekenton course.
Liam Roarty, Morpeth Harriers leading the senior men on the opening lap
Conrad Franks, Gateshead Harriers and Toby Loveday, Newcastle University head the fast pack runners
Iona Johnstone, Gateshead Harriers, U15 girls.
Shona Haston, Newcastle University making up places on the last lap.
Not a sight you would normally associate with cross country running in England but Wrekenton in early September 2021 is more like an African savannah.
Poppie Phillipson, Birtley AC, U11 girls.
